This prestigious recognition follows an extensive annual survey conducted by Time Out, which gathered insights from over 24,000 residents across 50 international metropolises. By blending local sentiment with expert analysis, the study highlights Hong Kong’s unique ability to balance rapid urban density with world-class infrastructure and a flourishing culinary landscape.
The city’s high placement is largely attributed to its spectacular “city of contrasts” identity. While Hong Kong is globally synonymous with its neon-lit skyline and status as a financial powerhouse, its geography offers a rare duality. Within a mere hour of the central business district, residents and visitors can transition from soaring skyscrapers to rugged mountain trails and serene coastal waters. This accessibility to nature, paired with a compact urban footprint, contributed to a 72 percent approval rating for the city’s walkability.
Gastronomy remains the crown jewel of the Hong Kong experience. According to the survey, 73 percent of respondents praised the city’s dining scene, which ranges from humble street-side cha chaan tengs to elite Michelin-starred establishments. The city’s liquid gold is also making waves; local favorite Bar Leone was recently named the best bar in the world, even securing a high-profile guest shift at the upcoming 98th Oscars’ after-party.
Beyond lifestyle and luxury, Hong Kong’s functional efficiency sets a global benchmark. The city’s public transportation network—comprising the MTR, buses, and iconic taxis—received the joint-highest score worldwide in its category. An overwhelming 93 percent of locals rated the transit system as “good” or “amazing,” noting its safety, cleanliness, and legendary punctuality. Furthermore, despite its reputation for high costs, the city proved surprisingly accessible in the cultural sector. During the current “Art Month,” 76 percent of residents reported that engaging with the local arts scene is either affordable or entirely free.
On the continental stage, Hong Kong ranks as the fifth-best city in Asia. It trails behind Shanghai (No. 2 globally), Bangkok (No. 8), Seoul (No. 9), and Tokyo (No. 10), while notably outperforming Singapore, which landed at No. 23. This year’s global title was awarded to Melbourne, Australia, which surged to the top spot due to its vibrant festival culture and significant infrastructure upgrades.
